The Philippines limits arrivals at Manila airport as Covid cases increase

The Philippines will limit foreign arrivals at its main airport in Manila to 1,500 passengers a day for a month starting March 18, the Civil Aeronautics Board said, as coronavirus infections increased again.

Philippine Airlines, in a Facebook post, said it could cancel some international flights. Some passengers will also have to postpone trips to Manila to comply with immigration directives, the company also said. Most foreigners are barred from entering the country.

The Philippines, which has the second-worst outbreak in Southeast Asia, reported more than 4,000 daily cases on Tuesday for a fifth day on Tuesday, with a total of 631,000 infections. Its daily count has been the highest since August in recent days, but it can be seen that the increase has had limited impact on the economy.

Several tourist spots in the historic Intramuros neighborhood of the nation’s capital will be closed until further notice, its said the administrator on his Facebook account. The government in recent weeks has allowed it theme parks along with cinemas and conferences to resume operations as it tried to further reopen an economy that would likely be maintained recession this quarter.
