The PlayStation 5 firmware update allows you to install compatible SSD storage

The second major PlayStation 5 firmware update will arrive this week and will finally allow you to add additional storage to the console. The update also includes several UI enhancements, new features for PS Remote Play and a few more updates.

While support for additional storage is the most important new feature of the September update, it’s also a bit tricky. The only supported storage will be certain M.2 high speed solid state drives … but not all. Only M.2 SSDs that meet Sony’s specific performance and size requirements will be supported, and even Sony says they may not work with the console. Sony also recommends that all M.2 SSDs be installed with a heatsink. When all these requirements are met and the unit is installed correctly, you will be able to download and play games directly from the new unit.

The new update will also bring several improvements to the PS5 user experience, which should make it easier to view game content and social features. The update will allow you to customize and hide the Control Center buttons, and even read and write messages from there.

There are also new features for trophy tracking, highlight highlighting and some other UI enhancements. For example, the game library will show the PS4 and PS5 versions of the games separately if you have both versions.

The PS Remote Play app also gets some improvements with the update, including the ability to play games over mobile networks. Users can select a variety of preferred video quality settings to manage overall network usage. Sony also says that the experience in mobile networks can vary greatly depending on the mobile phone providers and the network environment.

The September firmware update for PlayStation 5 is set to come out on Wednesday, though several features won’t be released until Thursday, September 23rd.
