The PNP commissioner claims that the candidate by direct nomination will prevail for the mayor of Guánica

The candidate for direct nomination for mayor of Guánica, Edgardo Cruz Vélez, prevails over the popular candidate, Ismael “Titi” Rodríguez, after more votes were in his favor, said the electoral commissioner of the New Progressive Party (PNP ), Héctor Joaquín Sánchez.

According to the official, Creu Vélez won with 2,390 votes.

Therefore, Edgardo Creu Vélez prevails in this contest by new votes “said Sanchez, who stressed that the review of the briefcases of the Guánica fight culminated and all that remains is to award 4 ballots.

He explained that after beginning to verify again the 30 briefcases of the fight of Guánica, to Vélez Cross they were adjudged to him 19 additional votes in his favor. This raised the number of votes he had to 2,354 versus 2,386 for Rodriguez.

In addition, Sánchez continued, Creu Vélez was awarded 27 votes in favor located on mixed ballot papers, which left him with a total of 2,381 votes.

This put Creu Vélez and Rodríguez in a tie because with the mixed votes awarded, Rodríguez had to subtract five votes, the PPD’s electoral commissioner explained.

“Then nine unallocated votes in favor of Creu Vélez were found in the briefcases,” Sánchez added.

He said that now it remains to be seen what will be the whereabouts of 4 ballots voted by direct nomination in favor of Creu Vélez, but as a municipal legislator. Sanchez said these ballots will be discussed at a EEC plenary meeting in the afternoon.

The counting of votes in Guánica took place today after the Supreme Court ordered the EEC to count all the votes cast by the voter on behalf of Edgardo Cruz Vélez regardless of whether or not he marked with an X the direct nomination box .

The EEC certified Rodriguez last December as the winner and he was sworn into office this week. If the EEC cancels Rodríguez’s certification and issues a new one in favor of Creu Vélez, this will be the new mayor of Guánica, who before being elected was rejected as an official candidate by the PNP and Project Dignidad.
