For the past 25 years, Mewtwo has become one of the most recognized Pokémon in the franchise. The psychic guy has been forcing fans since the days of Red and green Pokémon, but it’s hard to say if Mewtwo would have been so durable if it had been based on one of the other types of Pokémon. Earlier this month, artist Harry George on Instagram created different type variants for Squirtle, and now the artist has done the same with Mewtwo. It’s really interesting to see the 18 different ways of interpreting Mewtwo, and it’s clear that there was a lot of reflection.
Harry George’s Instagram post can be found embedded below.
It is clear that George worked hard to capture the essence of Mewtwo while channeling details reminiscent of each specific Pokémon type. None of the types appear in the post, but a quick look at each form should help most Pokémon fans decipher which one is intended to be which one. There are a lot of little details that should help viewers differentiate between what type of dragon and what is Flying, or what is meant to evoke Steel and what is electric.
In the Pokemon series, there is really only one Mewtwo; the creature was created as a result of experiments with Mew’s genetic data on the island of Cinnabar. As such, it seems unlikely that Mewtwo will get regional variants soon, as it would not quite adapt to the narrative of the series. Of course, it is always possible for Team Rocket or another group to try to replicate these experiments, this time with a different Pokémon type. Given Mewtwo’s popularity, it wouldn’t be a total surprise to see the creature get a regional variant this way, and it could end up looking like one created by George. For now, however, fans will only have to settle for the version that has existed since 1996.
In addition to his performances of Mewtwo and Squirtle, George has created several other pieces of Pokémon fan art. More of the artist’s work can be found on his Instagram page, which can be found right here.
