The Chamber of Deputies welcomed the amendments made by the Senate of the Republic to the bill amending the Civil Code and prohibiting child marriage and making it law.
When being accepted by the plenary of the deputies, the already called Law will pass the Executive authority that will be able to observe it or to promulgate it.
After being approved by the Chamber of Deputies in two consecutive readings in November, the piece amending Article 144 and repealing Article 145 of the Civil Code of the Dominican Republic, passed in the Senate and was referred to the permanent commission of Justice, where modifications were made to him.
The president of this commission and senator of the province of Santo Domingo, Antonio Taveras, had more than 10 amendments to the bill, but clarified at the time that it will not change the purpose of the same.
On the amendments, the proponent of the law, José Horacio, said that the senate “has enriched the project. It is a more solid text in legal terms and allows to make a happy New Year’s gift to the Dominican Republic.”
The law that seeks to eliminate child marriage was approved in two consecutive readings by the full House of Representatives last November.
The initiative was submitted by MP José Horaci Rodríguez and received a favorable report from the House Justice Committee.
With the approval of this draft resolution, article 144 of the Civil Code is amended to establish the following: “A man or woman may not marry under any circumstances before they have reached the age of 18. age “.
Similarly, Article 145 is deleted which states that “however, the Government may, for serious reasons, grant old exemptions”.
