“I was stunned. I felt I could be white maybe because I’m a successful woman in this field or because I’m Egyptian, but I’m not sure,” Marwa said during an interview for the BBC.
For her, the attacks are not new, as she said that throughout her training she has faced sexism. “People in our society still don’t accept the idea of girls working at sea away from their families for a long time. But when you do what you love, you don’t have to seek everyone’s approval.”
Yet she has managed to overcome herself and her courage earned her recognition in 2017. Marwa was honored by President Abdel Fattah al Sisi during the celebrations of Women’s Day in Egypt.
“My message to women who want to be in this race is to fight for what you love and not let negativity affect you,” said Marwa who will take her final exam to achieve the full rank of captain.
