Adam Gase will look for work next week after the Jets fire him, which is almost true. There was a little one outside of Boston that the Patriots might consider to be his new quarterbacks coach. Jedd Fisch has just left that role to take on the job of head coach at the University of Arizona.
It would make sense to see Gase land in New England. He and Josh McDaniels date back to 1999, when they were both low-level assistants to Nick Saban’s staff in the state of Michigan. Gase worked under McDaniels in Denver as a great receiver coach when McDaniels was the head coach. Patriots coach Bill Belichick is always highly praised by Gase as he was back on Tuesday during a conference call with Jets reporters.
“I think Adam has done a great job this year in continuing to improve the team with training,” Belichick said. “As usual, his excellent game plan and his calls are problems for the defense. This is a team that has improved. “
The bigger question than whether the Patriots would want Gase is whether Gase would be able to swallow his pride in working under McDaniels. Gase has coached for five seasons. His Jets contract is two more years, so he will make money. It would surely be a blow to his ego to become a position coach again, especially with someone who worked ten years ago.
Gase may not have many other options, but it is still unlikely that Jets fans will see him on the New England side line next year.
