The Taliban say it is preparing to form a new cabinet

The Taliban are preparing to arm a cabinet as the United States completes its evacuation operation, a spokesman for the insurgent group told Reuters.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid did not give an exact timeline of when the cabinet would be ready, according to the cabling service. However, he noted that the group has already appointed heads of education and public health institutions, among others.

Taliban spokesman news comes after the group consolidated power in the country over the past month, making military gains in several major cities before finally capturing Kabul.

After the capture of the capital, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. After the departure of the president, Vice President Amrullah Saleh declared himself “interim” president.

The country is also fraught with economic hardship, as its Afghan currency has lost much of its value and its banks have been closed for several weeks, according to Reuters. To add to the economic crisis, some parts of Afghanistan have suffered a severe drought and food prices have risen.

Mujahid said that once the Taliban has formed its new government, conditions in the country will stabilize again.

“The fall of Afghans against foreign currency is temporary and, due to the situation that suddenly changed, it will return to normal when the system of government starts working,” Mujahid told Reuters.
