ISLAMABAD: Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said on Monday that the group “wants” to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
He also reported that the Taliban will address Islamabad’s concerns about Pakistan-based terrorist group “Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan” (TTP), Samaa News reported.
Mujahid also confirmed that there will be an upcoming meeting between Chief Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed and the Chief of Pakistan, the General Intelligence Services (ISI) leader, and the main Taliban leader, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.
CPEC is part of China’s most ambitious “Belt and Road Initiative” project, with the goal of renewing the country’s historic trade routes to the coastal countries of Southeast Asia.
In 2015, China announced the “China, Pakistan Economic Corridor” (CPEC) project, which is worth $ 46 billion.
With the CPEC, Beijing intends to expand its influence in Pakistan and Central and South Asia to counter the influence of the United States and India.
The CPEC would connect the southern port of Gwadar, Pakistan, 626 kilometers west of Karachi, Balochistan, in the Arabian Sea, with the Xinjiang region in western China. It also includes plans to create road, rail and pipeline links to improve connectivity between China and the Middle East.
These events came amid reports suggesting that ISI has supported the Taliban’s capture of Afghanistan.
“Islamabad has played an important role in the formation of the Taliban, Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) is its creator and advocate,” author Sergio Restelli reported on the InsideOver news website.
The creation of the Taliban was Islamabad’s attempt to impose itself on Kabul as part of its strategic plan to take it to the region, Restelli added.
Several reports also claim that ISI had deployed its “cooperation agents” with the Taliban who have been involved in the capture of Afghanistan.
