The Toronto Blue Jays place Julian Merryweather closer in 10-day IL with oblique tension

DUNEDIN, Florida. – Toronto Blue Jays’ closest player, Julian Merryweather, has been classified on the ten-day injured list with a tense left oblique.

The right-hander felt discomfort in his left abdomen in his last warm-up throw in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s 7-3 win over the New York Yankees.

Merryweather came in with two runners and two out and threw just two pitches to Aaron Hicks before Gary Sanchez was tagged in a summary between first and second base after a ground throw. He did not return for the ninth.

Merryweather has two stops and has allowed just one hit and a walk with seven hits in 4 innings in four appearances. His fast ball has reached 100.4 mph this season.

In addition, Ross Stripling was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Yankees due to the narrowing of his right forearm. He couldn’t let go before the game.

TJ Zeuch replaced Stripling.

Game Notes: RHP David Phelps, hit in the lower back by Clint Frazier’s 100.7 mph line Tuesday night, is day-to-day with his back bruised. … RHP Anthony Castro bought his contract at the alternative site and will operate outside the bullring.
