Fans of the “Matrix” franchise got their first trailer for the highly anticipated fourth installment on Thursday, aptly titled “Matrix: Resurrections.”
Warner Bros. he previously mocked the trailer’s release after debuting with footage from the highly anticipated film at CinemaCon in August. The trailer brings Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss back to the world created by the Wachowski sisters for the first time since the third film was released in 2003.
The trailer, which garnered more than five million views in the first hours after its release, tells the continuing story of Thomas Anderson, better known as Neo. Both he and his former love, Trinity, seem to return to The Matrix, a computer simulation controlled by machines designed to keep humanity at bay.
However, this time they do not remember their past as freedom fighters against machines. Although there are clearly remnants left in Anderson’s head as he unpacks his dreams with a therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris. The action unfolds in the teaser showing stunning footage and a dramatic and realistic return to the world of “The Matrix,” all set in Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”.

The film also offers a look at new cast members like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff. Other stars are Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci.
Hollywood Reporter notes that Jada Pinkett Smith will also resume her role in the franchise alongside Reeves and Moss.

Writer and director Lana Wachowski co-wrote and co-directed the original “Matrix” trilogy with her sister Lilly. The series includes “The Matrix”, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” from 1999, both released in 2003. The “Matrix” franchise has not seen any other version since “The Matrix Trilogy” was updated for its 4K display in 2018.

The fourth installment was scheduled for a debut in May 2021, although production was stopped as a precaution during the coronavirus outbreak, so the date may be subject to change.
