WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday broke its own record of daily deaths for Covid-19, recording 3,936 fatalities in 24 hours, according to a Johns Hopkins University count.
The country most affected by the pandemic also recorded 250,173 new cases during the period as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (Wednesday 01.30 GMT), according to records from the Baltimore-based university.
This brings the U.S. to more than 21 million cases and 357,067 deaths in total since the start of the pandemic.
The number of people hospitalized is also the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, with more than 131,000 patients occupying beds due to Covid-19, according to data from the Covid Tracking Project.
The situation is especially serious in the south and west of the country.
Los Angeles ambulance workers were told to stop transporting some patients to the hospital with extremely low chances of survival and to limit oxygen consumption, as Covid’s historical cases outweigh medical resources.
The previous record of one-day deaths was set six days ago, with more than 3,920 deaths.
The United States is facing a dramatic increase in cases in recent months. Since the end of November, the number of daily deaths has increased dramatically, regularly exceeding 2,000 and often 3,000 daily deaths.
The projected increase driven by holiday meetings is expected to further worsen the situation.
The richest country in the world finally has the vaccination campaign, which began in mid-December, to overcome the epidemic.
But less than two percent of the population has been covered so far, with 4.8 million people receiving the first injection.
On Tuesday, President-elect Joe Biden, who will take office on January 20, spoke with his future team in charge of the health crisis.
According to a statement, several options to speed up vaccine delivery were discussed, including the possibility of increasing the role of the federal government.
