An intensive care nurse in New York, one of the first Americans to receive an approved coronavirus vaccine, moves to the United States to deliver millions of doses just days after the Pfizer / Biotech shot was approved.
Sandra Lindsay was vaccinated live on camera just after 9am on Monday, just hours after the first dose arrived at hospitals across the country.
The vaccine marks the starting point for what would be a month-long process aimed at vaccinating Americans enough to slow the spread of the disease, which has now killed more than 290,000 people.
“It’s getting dark,” Ms. Lindsay, a nurse at the forefront of the fight against infection last year, echoed. “Dark, painful. So today I feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel. ”
He said he was confident about the safety of the vaccine. “I believe in science,” he said. “So I had no hesitation when asked if I would be vaccinated.”
Yves Troso, head of the emergency department at Lennox Hill Hospital, who was vaccinated on Monday, said the infection had affected him personally: he had lost an uncle to Covit-19, and another family member is currently hospitalized with the virus.
“This is a very important day,” he said. “This is a very promising day.”
“I believe this is a weapon that will end the war,” said Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York. “This is the beginning of the last chapter of the book, but now we must do it.”
Data from the Govt tracking program showed that 187,000 people in the United States tested positive for the disease on Sunday and 1,482 died. The United States has recorded more than 16 million cases since the outbreak, the highest in the world so far.
Healthcare workers and those in care homes are about to receive the first dose of the vaccine, with a 3m injection scheduled for the first week.

The FDA approved the Pfizer / Bioendech vaccine late Friday, after which workers at Pfizer’s factories in Michigan and Wisconsin prepared and sent initial doses over the weekend.
These were received at 145 sites on Monday morning, and shipped to a further 425 sites on Tuesday and to 66 sites on Wednesday. Almost all sites are large hospitals with facilities to keep the vaccine at minus 70C.
All dosages done by the end of this year are set to go to those at high risk of contracting the virus in a health care system or long-term care center.
