The United States expands non-essential travel restrictions with Canada and Mexico

“In coordination with public health and medical experts, DHS continues to work closely with its partners in the United States and internationally to determine how to resume normal travel safely and sustainably,” the department tweeted.

The United States has been limiting non-essential travel across the two borders since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and extending these restrictions monthly. Restrictions do not apply to cross-border trade, U.S. citizens, and legal permanent residents, as well as people traveling for medical or school purposes, among others.

Travel restrictions, which date back to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, have come under intense scrutiny by pressure groups, lawmakers and border mayors who have implored the Biden administration to adjust the limits to adapt to the evolving landscape. For example, fully vaccinated U.S. citizens and permanent residents currently residing in the United States can enter Canada as early as last week.
