DeLAND, Fla. – A 43-year-old man with a physical disability was attacked, beaten and robbed by two men who remain at large, DeLand police said.
The attack occurred around 5:15 p.m. Sunday in front of the first-class barbershop on 120 E. New York Avenue.
“The way they attacked him and took off. It was horrible, ”said Christopher Vest, a barber who witnessed the event.
The victim called police about 40 minutes after the attack, saying two men beat him and stole his money and car keys, authorities said.
DeLand police said the surveillance video of a nearby business shows a man in a white T-shirt punching the victim several times. A second assailant approached the victim and searched the man’s pockets, police said.
Vest said he saw the attack pass.
“The perpetrators sat there for at least 30 minutes, at least watching him,” Vest said. “He (one of the perpetrators) asked him if he first opened the barber shop and then hit him with the brass knuckles and once on the ground the other suspect went up, grabbed his things and then take off. ”
The culprits ran south through a parking lot, according to police.
The victim, who suffered a broken nose and two black eyes, was admitted to AdventHealth DeLand and later released, police said.
“She is OK. I don’t think anyone deserves it, “Vest said.” He’s a very kind person and he would do anything he could for anyone and that’s what makes it even harder to sit here and think about it. someone who is just trying to make a living is ridiculous. “
One of the assailants was wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants. The other was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. Officers are asking the public for help in identifying them.
Authorities say the victim has been released from hospital. First Class Barber Shop offers a $ 500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call DeLand Police at 386-626-7422.
