Raleigh, North Carolina – An investigation has determined that a hand grenade found on Sunday in a Raleigh garden poses no danger.
A Raleigh police spokesman said the grenade was real, but that it had a hole in the bottom with no gunpowder inside. He added that pomegranate is sold in surplus stores as a novelty.
Officials said the grenade was very rusty from having been underground for a long time.
Residents of the 600 block of Cabarrus East Street endured a couple of tense hours (three houses were briefly evacuated) after a person working in the garden found the grenade and called police.
Three members of the Raleigh Police Department bomb squad removed the grenade and determined it was not a threat.
It was not immediately known where the pomegranate may have come from, how old it is or how long it may have been in the garden.
