The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is moving toward a request to change the official start date for the hurricane season from June 1 to May 15. .
The World Meteorological Organization will hold its annual committee meeting next month and on the agenda will be whether or not to approve whether to advance two weeks from the start of the hurricane season.
According to the committee’s agenda, the change would be based on the fact that during the last nine hurricane seasons, seven tropical storms have formed on the date from May 15 to June 1.
“These systems are a problem for people because they usually form near land with uneven weather, and can lead to a misconception that they are early, uncommon, and unimportant,” the document says.
Experts explain that messages from the National Meteorological System (SNM) usually warn the population to prepare for the start of the season, however, “the current time of the season is not the most beneficial for preparation efforts. as these early storms can be dangerous. “
Since 2012, the proposal says, there have been at least 20 direct deaths from storms that occurred by the end of May and up to 200 million in damage have been recorded.
Faced with this, the NHC understands that a partial remedy is to advance the hurricane season in the Atlantic, and leads to the agency starting to issue bulletins about storms 15 days earlier than usual.
