Ghosts’ n Goblins Creator Tokuro Fujiwara has recently shared an amazing factoid of the development of Capcom’s extremely tough platform game: iconic boxers with drawings of Arthur’s heart are covered in strawberries. Okay, maybe I find it mind-boggling.

“There’s one very important detail I need to share with you that people might not know: the pattern of your underwear is actually strawberries,” Fujiwara said. Polygon. “Arthur has that air of sturdiness when he has his armor on, but inside, he likes it a little and he wears his favorite boxers.”

From Ghosts’ n Goblins made his arcade debut in 1985, players have widely accepted that Arthur’s underwear throughout the series had heart designs. But it is so the robe of the white magician Final Fantasy III, hardware limitations probably contributed to this discrepancy between what the developers intended and what the players interpreted on the screen.

They’re clearly strawberries, but most people won’t look for that kind of conceptual art.

If we look back, the little red spots on Arthur’s boxers could be just about anything, and only in concept art does the strawberry pattern become apparent. It certainly didn’t help Capcom use heart boxers in 2001 Maximum: ghosts in glory, a spiritual successor to the classic Ghosts’ n Goblins series, and its 2003 sequel Maximum Vs. Zin’s army. Even hearts appeared a Dead Rising Easter egg.

Interestingly, the truth has been there for a long time. Arthur’s biography of both Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 i Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 of 2011 mention “strawberry print boxers”. They can even be seen during the game after your super Golden Armor is over, but these games are probably a little too chaotic to pay attention to something so minor.

“However, her underwear isn’t just something she likes to wear,” Fujiwara explained during her Polygon interview. “It was actually a gift from the princess and acts as a ‘charm’ to protect Arthur in battle. It’s probably safe to say that the strawberry design was something the princess liked.”

Oh, and in case you were wondering, there’s no doubt Arthur’s boxers have strawberry drawings Ghosts’ n Goblins Resurrection, a storybook-style remaster of the original 1985 release on Switch on February 25th. I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been thinking of them as hearts for so long that I’m not sure what to make of the truth. If you need to talk, I’m here.
