Three rockets were fired at the airport Erbil, en north of Iraq, one of which hit a military complex where they are soldiers dand the coalition led by United States, two security sources told AFP on Monday.
the others two rockets cyesterday in residential areas near the airport, said one of the sources, without being able to indicate immediately if there were victims. It is the first time, in almost two months, that one has occurred attack versus military or diplomatic facilities in Iraq.
Around 6.30pm GMT, an AFP reporter heard several loud explosions in northwest suburbs of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region of Iraq.
Iraqi sources told AFP that at least 3 rockets were fired in the direction of airport.
Western military and diplomatic posts have sidthe attacked for dozens of rockets and bombings since the fall of 2019, but most of the violence has taken place in Baghdad.
Both US and Iraqi officials have blamed the armed groups hard line, including the pro-Iranian faction Kataeb Hezbollah.
These groups oppose the US-led coalition, who has his based in Iraq since 2014 to help local forces fight the Islamic State jihadist group.
With Isis largely defeated, the coalition has been reduced to less than 3,500 cash in total, 2,500 of which are American troops.
