Washington – After the irruption in the federal Capitol, “all options are on the table” to prosecute members of the violent mob of supporters of the president Donald Trump, Including sedition charges, Michael Sherwin, the District of Columbia’s interim federal prosecutor, said Thursday.
Sherwin said prosecutors plan to file 15 federal cases Thursday for crimes such as unauthorized access and theft of property. He noted that investigators are reviewing piles of evidence to present additional charges.
“All these charges are on the table … We will present as many charges as we can,” he noted.
More than 90 people have been arrested by Washington police and more arrests are likely to be made. U.S. prosecutors across the nation have vowed to find any resident who has participated in the corporate uprising to obstruct the peaceful transition to power and bring to justice.
Experts said some could face the charge of seditious conspiracy, which is rarely used. It is the same charge that the Justice Department, then headed by former Secretary William Barr, proposed that it be brought against those who promoted violence in protests last summer over the deaths of African Americans at the hands of the police.
Then-Undersecretary of Justice Jeffrey Rosen, who took over the Justice Department when Barr resigned last month, told prosecutors in a memorandum issued in September that they should consider using the conspiracy charge. seditious against violent protesters, noting that “it does not require evidence of a plot to overthrow the US government despite what the name might suggest.”
