The representative of District 23, José ‘Cheíto’ Rivera Fusta and president of the Commission of Tourism and Cooperativism of the Chamber, asked the Puerto Rican Police on Tuesday to take immediate action in the face of the “uncontrollability” shown by tourists in San Juan .
“In recent weeks we have seen a total lack of control over the behavior of tourists visiting us in San Juan. From fights, assaults on residents and a total lack of respect for the executive order and protocols ruled by the Department of Health to prevent contagion with COVID-19, even people late at night on Airbnb who do not recognize authority on the Island, “Rivera Fusta said in written communication.
We recommend:
The representative stated that “the situation has already become unsustainable, so we asked the Puerto Rican Police to take immediate action to address this issue and apply the law to those who are violating it. We cannot continue to put at risk the safety and health of the residents of Illa Verda, Comtat and Vell Sant Joan, or the thousands of employees who work in hotels, inns and restaurants that provide a service to those who visit us.The Tourism Company and its director , Carlos Mercat, have done everything possible to work out the situation, but the police must act now. “
Rivera Fusta insisted that “we all want the tourist activity to be reactivated as soon as possible. We have had hard years and there are thousands of jobs that depend on it, but this is a country of law and order. We do not want to send the message to the world that the disorder is part of the experience of visiting Puerto Rico, I ask the police to act and intervene with all those tourists who are in violation of the protocols. We urge the owners of Airbnb to take the due precautions when renting their properties, as we must be responsible and we must protect the lives of tourism workers on our island. “
