They find alleged irregularities with the early vote in Culebra

The electoral commissioner of the Democratic People’s Party (PPD), Gerardo “Toñito” Cruz, denounced this Wednesday that he found alleged irregularities in the advanced votes cast in the electoral contest by the mayor of Culebra.

At a press conference, Cruz detailed each of the alleged irregularities he found that included voters registered in other jurisdictions, requests for early voting by mail with ballots sent to the same postal address and voters who do not live in Puerto Rico.

He attributed these problems to the Electoral Code, approved on June 20.

“Culebra is the best example of the approval of an Electoral Code designed to allow a fraudulent vote. Now, a voter can request the advance vote in its absent form, without any explanation,” Creu denounced alongside the mayor of Culebra, Iván Solís.

In Culebra there is a count, which began today at the Colosseum Roberto Clemente as part of the general scrutiny, given that Edilberto (Junito) Romero, candidate of the New Progressive Party prevail by only two votes against Solís.

He points out that he has four voters who, despite living in Culebra, asked for his ballot to a municipality address, but the property owner has no ties to these voters.

Another of the irregularities he mentioned is that of a voter who, according to social media, lives in the United States, but applied for an early vote by mail as a resident of the island municipality.

“He may have asked for an absentee vote, because you don’t have to justify why he orders you to ask for the ballot to get to Florida or Texas. an address where his mother and sister also receive the ballots, “he said.

The mayor of Culebra, meanwhile, said he made a referral to the Justice Department.

“We will establish in Culebra that democracy is complied with and electoral laws because in Culebra we have been pioneers in recusals historically. Since 2012 when I entered, we have established recusals, unfortunately due to the pandemic there were no trials of recusals, but many of those votes were approved through the Administrative Board of Absent Voting and Advanced Voting after the recusal date, ”he indicated.
