Three COVID-19 vaccines under review in the final phase for WHO emergency approval

According to reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) is in the final stages of reviewing three coronavirus vaccines for international emergency distribution.

Reuters reported On Wednesday, an internal document obtained by newswire indicated that the WHO could give the green light to the inoculations developed for the coming weeks or months Modern, AstraZeneca and Sinopharm and Sinovac from China.

The WHO has already approved the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

According to Reuters, Mariangela Simao, WHO Deputy Director-General for Access to Medicines, Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals, said: “We have 3 more in the final phase that will be evaluated to include them, we have 2 more to present … In total, we have 13. ”

Simao added that the WHO, the public health wing of the United Nations, did not know of any deaths related to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Emergency approval would allow the organization to begin distributing inoculations to countries around the world, primarily those with lower incomes that have a reduced capacity for widespread medical distribution. The WHO also serves as a health regulatory board for non-independent countries, similar to those in the United States and the United Kingdom, which are able to review the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

The news comes on the same day as President Biden’s inauguration, which is scheduled to issue a series of executive orders on Wednesday evening that will include the U.S. reinstating the WHO.
