The home in the municipality of Lyon was completely set on fire after the accident, but the five residents of the house were evacuated safely. The family cat, however, did not survive the incident, according to CNN affiliate WDIV.
In a statement to The Hill, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the plane as a single-engine Piper PA-24 and said the crash occurred around 4 p.m., local time.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident and release more details as they arrive.
A neighbor told the local that there were concerns that something like this might happen due to the proximity of the area to Oakland / Southwest Airport.
“I have two brothers under the age of 2 and they were sleeping upstairs; they were taking a nap … You worry about how this could happen to us, because these planes fly around all the time down,” Chase Southwick told CNN.
