NEW YORK – Francisco Lindor broke the tie in the eighth inning with his third homer of the game falling to the right field stands after a scuffle with rival fielder Giancarlo Santanton and the Mets defeated Sunday 8- 7 to the Yankees, both New York City clubs.
The encounter was the last of the Subway Series between the two sets and almost ended in pitched fight.
The Puerto Rican shook a three-run toddler, batting left, in front of an almost straight throw from rookie Clarke Schmidt in the second inning; shooting a lone homer in the sixth hitting right in front of a low shot from Dominican Wandy Peralta and made a quadrangular left hitting to Chad Green (7-7) that broke the tie 7-7.
It was the first time that Lindor gets 3 fights in a game after not showing much effectiveness most of his first campaign with the Mets.
As he turned the bases with his second home run, Lindor took a hand in front of his mouth, turned to the Yankees, and pretended to be whistling.
This in the face of the Mets’ belief that the Yankees had been whistling on Saturday to warn their batters about the type of pitch that Taijuan Walker would make for them.
The aversion intensified when Stanton tied the board with a two-run homer on the seventh connected to left-hander Brad Hand.
After jogging, Stanton started walking as he turned around in the middle, showed his back to the third and called with the shortstop.
Lindor and second baseman Javier Báez signaled to Stanton that Vinera was heading towards them, and when Stanton reached the plate, players from both dugouts invaded the field.
The bullpens were also emptied. Brett Gardner showed his thumbs down twice to the Mets. The next launch was delayed by almost four minutes.
Seth Lugo (4-2) worked the eighth episode and Puerto Rican Edwin Diaz got his 29 save on 35 occasions.
For the Yankees, Venezuelans Gleyber Torres 4-1, one scored, two rebounds, and Rougned Odor 1-0. Dominican Gary Sanchez 3-0. Colombian Gio Urshela 4-1.
For the Mets, the Dominican Jonathan Villar 4-1, one scored. Puerto Ricans Francisco Lindor 4-3, 3 scored, 5 produced, and Javier Báez 4-2. The Venezuelan Carlos Carrasco 1-0.
