Tina Knowles defends Beyoncé amid the Tiffany Diamond controversy

Beyoncé’s mother took to Instagram this week to defend the “Lemonade” singer from criticism of her new Tiffany & Co. ads, in which she appears dressed as the famous Tiffany Diamond.

The 128.54-carat yellow jewel was unearthed in 1877 in the Kimberley Mines of South Africa and some amateurs and scholars were not happy with the colonial origins of the stone and Bey’s participation in the campaign.

“It’s not just a‘ necklace ’, but a blood diamond that was extracted from the blood of South Africans, if they didn’t meet the quota, their hands and feet were mutilated or just died [sic],” a person he tweeted.

“Beyoncé campaigning for Tiffany with a blood diamond doesn’t go well with her brand ESPECIALLY given her African influence in recent years,” said another dit.

Tina commented on The Grio’s Instagram post that garnered some of the criticism on Wednesday.

“How many of you have diamonds with socially conscious activists? I thought so! So guess what you tried to check to see where the diamond came from? Probably not [sic]!, “she wrote.

“So when you commit, you won’t have a diamond that you put on a sterling silver band. It’s best to check where it came from and where it came from and why you added it. look at Leather calls which is weird because they came from another country to ban and not buy diamonds as it is fair [sic] !! ”

Beyonce is only the fourth person – and the first black woman – to carry the gemstone. Previous wearers include her “Telephone” collaborator, Lady Gaga, at the 2019 2019scar, as well as Audrey Hepburn, who dressed her in a commercial for the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Many also pointed out on social media that Gaga and Hepburn were not criticized for wearing the piece, with a piulant, “Lady Gaga wore that diamond necklace and it was all love, but as soon as it falls on Beyoncé’s neck, she suddenly remembers where it is and what a blood diamond is like.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have yet to comment on the reaction surrounding her campaign, which also included fans questioning the inclusion of a Basquiat painting never seen before in one of the images.

As part of its partnership with the Carters, Tiffany & Co. is committed to a $ 2 million commitment to scholarship and internship programs for historically black colleges and universities (HBCU).
