Trump will hold a rally in Georgia on the eve of the Senate election

President Trump and the Republican National Committee said Sunday that the president will hold a rally in Dalton, Georgia, on Jan. 4, the night before the state celebration decisive elections elected to the Senate. Republicans must hold at least one of those Senate seats to hold a Senate majority, while Democrats must win both to get a 50-50 tie, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker vote.

“On behalf of two GREAT senators, @sendavidperdue & @KLoeffler, I will be going to Georgia on Monday night, January 4th, to have a great and wonderful RALLY. So important to our country that they win! ” Trump tweeted on Sunday night.

Trump announced that he would go to Georgia shortly before The White House announced had signed a $ 900 billion COVID-19 economic relief bill, coupled with a $ 1.4 trillion government spending bill. His refusal to sign the bill for nearly a week had put the two Republican senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, in a difficult spot before the runoff, as both voted on it. Both Perdue and Loeffler immediately issued statements thanking Mr. Trump for the bill.

Neither Perdue nor Loeffler got 50% of the vote in November, which forced the election. Perdue led Democratic opponent Jon Ossoff, and while Raphael Warnock received more votes in his career, Loeffler and Republican Congressman Doug Collins received more votes than he did.

The race has attracted a significant amount of money, and last week Ossoff became the best-funded Senate candidate of all time, raising $ 107 million between Oct. 15 and Oct. 15 alone. December.

At Trump’s previous rally in Georgia, he falsely insisted that “we won the election” and the state in particular. Trump has refused to grant the general election and has pointed to Republican election officials in Georgia, which turned blue for President-elect Joe Biden, when he made baseless allegations of widespread voter fraud and manipulated elections.

With Dec. 14, the Electoral College confirmed Mr. Biden’s victory and a slew of lawsuits challenging the election results by failing in the hall, Trump pointed out his hopes of overturning the election results in both houses of Congress. agreeing to oppose the results of several key states when they meet to count the votes on January 6th. But Democrats have a majority in the House of Representatives and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called on GOP senators last week not to oppose election results when the joint session is called.

Sen. John Thune, a South Dakota Republican and a majority whip, said the attempt to cast state election votes “just goes nowhere.”

“In the Senate he would fall like a shot dog,” Thune told reporters Dec. 21.

Dalton, where the Jan. 4 rally will be held, is located in one of Georgia’s most conservative House districts. In January, the district will be represented by Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has promoted QAnon conspiracy theories and is a strong ally of Mr. Trump.

The Republican National Committee said all attendees at the Dalton rally will be required to undergo temperature checks, be provided with masks that are “instructed to wear” and have access to hand sanitizer. The rally is being held in an airport hangar, a familiar place for Trump rallies ahead of the election.
