Roxboro, NC – A shooting involving an officer inside the Person County courthouse was reported Thursday afternoon.
A source told WRAL News that a person was on trial for a felony felony jail term and was found guilty.
The source said the man started yelling and threw a chair. City officials in Roxboro said it appeared the man tried to attack people inside the room, including the bailiff.
The source said two law enforcement officers worked to subdue the man, but apparently during the fight the man grabbed one of the agent’s weapons. At that moment, an agent shot the man, according to the source.
City officials in Roxboro said one person was taken to a hospital in critical condition. One officer received a broken arm and the other broke an arm during the fight, according to the source.
People living in the area are stunned by what unfolded.
“I didn’t expect something like this to happen in Roxoboro,” said Leslie Evans, who lives near the court. “But again, with all the madness that’s been going on lately, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.”
The State Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation, which is typical of a shooting involving an officer. People County District Attorney Mike Waters said Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman would handle the incident along with the SBI, as Waters office employees were in the room judicial during the shooting.
The Person County Court will remain closed Thursday.
