UConn Health has canceled all vaccine appointments for the first dose of COVID-19 that were scheduled for next week due to the shortage of vaccines.
Officials said there is a shortage of vaccines at the state and federal levels and that their weekly vaccine allocation is currently being reduced.
All appointments for the first doses that were scheduled at UConn Health for Monday, Feb. 1 through Monday, Feb. 8 have been canceled.
The coronavirus vaccine has been shown to be safe, but some of the temporary side effects may seem quite difficult, especially when this second dose is obtained. Iahn Gonsenhauser, head of patient safety at Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center, described his own experience with “extreme” fever and chills after his second shot to know what to expect.
According to UConn Health, decisions will be made next week on whether to cancel additional appointments beyond Feb. 8.
UConn Health will not accept any new first dose appointments by phone or online.
Officials said anyone with a second dose appointment during this time period should proceed as planned, unless COVID-19 Vaccine Program staff contact them.
Those currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine include:
- Phase 1: people who provide services to health centers that are at risk of direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious materials.
- Phase 1b: people aged 75 or over.
