UFC fighter Irwin Rivera was arrested Thursday for two counts of attempted murder, according to an incident report obtained by ESPN.
He was booked shortly after noon ET after being arrested by the Boynton Beach police department and is being held without bail, according to online prison records.
Boynton Beach Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Slater told ESPN that Rivera is accused of stabbing her two sisters.
Boynton Beach police officers found two women (one 22-year-old and the other 33-year-old) with multiple stab wounds after being called to a residence, according to the incident report. The younger woman had injuries to her back, head and arm. The old woman had wounds to her back, face, arms and hands. Both were alive and were rushed to a hospital.
One of the sisters told police they were staying with her brother, Rivera, in one of her free rooms and woke up for Rivera to stab them repeatedly with a knife, according to the report.
Rivera fled the scene. On Thursday morning, police contacted him around 7 a.m. (ET) and, according to the report, Rivera said, “I killed my sisters.” According to the report, Rivera told police he entered his sisters’ bedroom while they slept and stabbed them with a “brass knife.” Rivera told police he believed he had killed his sisters and did so because it was his purpose, which he called a “superior power.”
In a statement, the UFC said it is investigating the situation “extremely worrying” and would not offer Rivera a fight at the moment.
“The UFC is aware of the recent Irwin Rivera-related incident and subsequently received information from its management that showed consistent behavior with mental health issues,” the UFC statement said. “Complaints are extremely worrying and the organization is currently gathering additional information. The investigation is ongoing and possible next steps, including disciplinary action or medical attention, will be determined at the conclusion. In addition, UFC has informed Rivera’s management that he will not be offered a fight at this time. “
Rivera, 31, recently fought in UFC Fight Night: Covington against Woodley on September 19, losing a split decision to Andre Ewell. Rivera made his UFC debut in May and earned his first UFC victory in August, beating Ali AlQaisi. Rivera is the former Tant FC heavyweight champion.
