The University of Massachusetts School of Medicine will change its name after a $ 175 million donation from the Morningside Foundation, a donation that will double the endowment of the state’s only public school of medicine.
The school will be renamed UMass Chan School of Medicine by TH Chan, the late patriarch of the Chan family, who was deeply committed to supporting higher education.
“The Morningside Foundation and the Chan family are proud to honor the legacy of their patriarch and matriarch and their deep commitment to advancing health and education. There is a powerful alchemy and a very special culture in the world. UMass School of Medicine in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, ”the foundation, which is the Chan family’s investment group, said in a statement.
Gov. Charlie Baker, Medical School Rector Michael Collins, UMass President Martin Meehan, and UMass Board members plan to meet at the UMass Club in Boston on Tuesday at 10 a.m. so that the means are available to mark the donation.
The three postgraduate schools at UMass Medical will go on to say TH School of Medicine Chan; the Tan Chingfen Postgraduate School of Nursing; and the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
This gift is a powerful statement about the stature and potential of our medical school, a very special place, “Collins said.” The confidence this historic gift conveys about our medical school is impressive, allowing us to recruit renowned and innovative professors, more innovative biomedical research, provide financial support to highly qualified and diverse students; and be increasingly expansive in fulfilling our public service mission. “
The news comes a week after SWAMPSCOTT’s Robert and Donna Manning announced plans to give UMass $ 50 million to increase access and opportunities in the five-campus college system.
The medical school in Worcester is celebrating its 50th anniversary of “educating future doctors, nursing leaders and biomedical scientists and its Nobel Prize-winning research firm has grown to $ 400 million,” according to UMass.
