United Center vaccine appointments open Thursday, more than 100,000 places available for COVID intake

CHICAGO (WLS) – With the mass vaccination site outside the United Center open a week starting Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said people will be able to start signing up for appointments this Thursday.

A total of 110,000 appointments will be provided and the first appointments will open at 8:30 a.m. for seniors.

“This is a total call to seniors, their families or anyone else on the network and the seniors support system to sign up for these appointments before they are taken,” said Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

To register for an appointment, visit www.zocdoc.com/vaccine or call the multilingual hotline (312) 746-4835 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

“I really hope there’s a lot dedicated to phone slots,” said Courtney Hedderman, AARP’s associate state director in Illinois. “That will make a big difference for people.”

After the senior registration period, anyone eligible for a vaccine as part of the Phase 1B + group can begin scheduling appointments on Sunday, March 7 at 4 p.m.

The United Center will open a limited number of appointments on March 9 before opening fully on March 10. The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

Officials said only initial vaccines will be offered initially, but a transmission component is planned to be added. The city works with councilors and community groups to get people to sign up and their appointments.

“One of the reasons we really wanted to keep that hour open until Sunday was to offer if the appointments weren’t full by then, to really think about that weekend time when religious groups can get together and encourage them to think. also ways help enroll your seniors, ”said Dr. Allison Arwady.

On Friday, 222 U.S. Army soldiers will arrive in Chicago to prepare for their mission to administer up to 6,000 doses a day. UC will administer the Pfizer vaccine, so recipients will have to return three weeks later for a second dose.

The city said the new Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine will be used this month to vaccinate at the airport and other transportation workers, as well as manufacturers and people at home.

“Our goal is to vaccinate these highest-risk individuals, in terms of hospitalizations and deaths, and these highest-risk settings,” Dr. Arwady said.

Currently, there are still half a million elderly people in Cook County who have not been vaccinated.

“In order for us to really rise above this terrible pandemic, we need to vaccinate our seniors, as quickly and humanly as possible, without shortcuts,” Mayor Lightfoot said.

The mayor encourages those with experience in technology and access to computers to register online and leave phones for those who need to call an appointment.

Advocate Aurora Health confirmed it is partnering with the city at a potential mass vaccination site near Wrigley Field, but declined to share specific details.

Although the federal mass vaccination site of the United Center is managed by the federal government, this site would be run by Advocate.

HEALTH STATEMENT AURORA LAWYER:
As a leader in community health care, we are committed to doing our best to carry out the vaccination process as quickly, equitably and safely as possible.
We are proud to collaborate on a possible Wrigley Field mass vaccination site, which would potentially be authorized by the City of Chicago. If the site is designated and supplies for the city’s vaccine are available, Advocate Aurora Health would provide clinical staff and technical infrastructure.
This location is considered because it is a convenient option for people who do not own cars as it is easily accessible from the CTA. This is part of our continued focus on collaboration to ensure that residents of disproportionately affected communities have access to the vaccine as supplies become available.
We continue to believe that the vaccine is the best way to end this pandemic and we continue to use current and very limited supplies for our most vulnerable patients over 65 years of age.
