According to senior US officials, Trump issued a directive to extend Secret Service protection subsequent to the presidency to 13 members of his family, contrary to what is stipulated by law.
Federal law dictates that only Trump, his wife Melania and their youngest son, Barron, 14 years old, are the only family members with the right to receive protection from the Secret Service after they leave the White House.
The couple is entitled to receive it for the rest of their lives, while Barron only until he turns 16 years old. Former Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, Karen, will also receive ongoing security for the next six months under the same protection law.
