Updates and calendar for Week 2 of the NFL preseason

The second full week of the preseason kicks off Thursday, one of five days in a row with NFL action. With three weeks to go before the start of the regular season, expect more headlines and names you know to play this week.

Things started Thursday with the New England Patriots traveling to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, a game in which Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was scratched late due to illness. The Patriots rolled.

Two more inclinations begin on Friday, including the first ESPN broadcast of the 2021 season. This meeting between the Kansas City and Arizona Cardinals chiefs will be a college meeting, with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes taking on his coach in Texas. Tech, Kliff Kingsbury, at least for a series or two.

The bulk of the action will take place on Saturday, with 10 matches scheduled. The day begins with an afternoon clash between the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears, followed by the New York Jets facing the Green Bay Packers. We may be able to see the Jets legend, new QB player Zach Wilson, Packers legend Aaron Rodgers, in real time. The Night Slate features a Texas-sized battle between the Houston Texans and the Dallas Cowboys of “Jerry World” and the Las Vegas Raiders (arguably Los Angeles’ most popular team) facing the Los Angeles Rams ( who want this title).

The bowl of Odell Beckham Jr. between the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns is one of two contests on Sunday, while Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

NFL Preseason Week 2 Schedule

Thursday’s game

Outstanding performer: Patriots QB Cam Newton: 8 of 9 going 103 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT

Cam Newton made his most decisive statement so far that he is not giving up his starting quarterback job, finishing 8 of 9 for 103 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions on three discs. Newton looked as comfortable as he has been as a Patriot, albeit against the Eagles’ second-string defense, with his 28-yard TD to receiver Jakobi Meyers who would arrive after Meyers gave him a hand signal before the catch. to declare their intentions. This reflects a QB and a WR that operate at maximum efficiency from the point of view of prior communication. Meanwhile, Mac Jones had some highlights in relief, with his first record covering 91 yards in 17 plays and chewing 9:04 on the clock. Jones finished 13 of 19 for 146 yards in four units. – Mike Reiss

Next match: in Giants (18.00 ET, August 29)

Rookie receiver DeVonta Smith debuted in preseason and finished with two 19-yard catches on four goals in one half of work. Much more important than the statistical line was the fact that Smith moved well and did not appear to be slowed down by the left MCL sprain that kept him out of practice for two weeks. In his second catch of the night, he started coming in, braked and retired to beat cornerback Michael Jackson for a 10-yard reception, showing shadows of his way to winning the Heisman Trophy. It took a while to finish off the rust, as Smith’s night started with a couple of drops on a couple of imperfect passes from Joe Flacco (who started with a Jalen Hurts illness), but Smith softened. se as the game progressed and opened strongly. All in all it was a successful warm-up for the start of the regular season against the Atlanta Falcons on September 12th. – Tim McManus
