Update for Wednesday, March 3rd
Oklahoma reported 747 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the cumulative number of cases in the state is 425,747.
The Department of Health said Wednesday it will change the way it reports COVID-related deaths. OSDH will use a provisional death count so that the reported deaths in the state are reflected in those of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and show a “more timely picture” of the impact of the disease in Oklahoma.
Prior to Wednesday, there was a difference of about 2,500 between the number of deaths reported by OSDH and that reported by CDC. Wednesday’s provisional count was 7,035.
The interim death count provided by the CDC is based on death certificates. From the OSDH: “As cases increased by the end of 2020, our investigative epidemiologists began to find a larger number of incomplete records that require in-depth investigation. This process has subsequently caused a growing gap. among the OSDH death toll “.
“We believe now is the right time to make this transition in our reporting system, so it is not perceived that we are minimizing these deaths,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Jared Taylor. “We recognize that each of these deaths is a tragedy and comes at a great cost to this individual’s family and friends, to the state of Oklahoma and to the world.”
