USPS names 4 worst performing Chicago post offices; the report shows 62,000 delayed mail items over several months

CHICAGO (WLS): There have been thousands of lost or delayed emails and no clear answers from the Chicago postal service.

On Thursday morning, an American congressman became involved.

Residents of the south and southwest side have been complaining about the problems with sending mail for months.

A new report released Thursday revealed deficiencies in the post office.

The USPS inspector general’s report highlights the four worst-performing Chicago locations:

  • 83rd in Ashland
  • 77th Cottage Grove
  • 46th Cottage Grove
  • 3600 paintings of West 79th Street.
  • Delayed mail, including letters and packages from these locations, totaled more than 62,000 between last September and February.

Congressman Bobby Rush, who joined local councilors and mayors of Alsip and Evergreen Park at a press conference this morning, found it unacceptable.

“People who depend on the postal service, the elderly, families and other people who depend on the postal service on a day-to-day basis; it is an absolute, epic, total and undeniable failure,” Rush said.

He calls for the resignation of the postmaster and the revision of the address.

The report he highlighted also revealed inaccurate reports about the delayed mail.

Some of them included “voter information” from the Secretary of State.

“We don’t deserve the kind of treatment we’re getting in Chicago,” said Pat Dowell, a 3rd Ward councilor. “This is not just a problem on the south side; it’s happening on the north side and in suburban areas. It’s time for a change.”

The report also focused on the inadequate scanning and handling of hundreds of packages and the absence rates of letter carriers, which in some cases reached 50%.
