Utility companies warn of possible power outages in western Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Energy companies are facing growing energy demand as much of the country experiences a dangerous historical cold. Some companies have implemented DC power outages in several states and this could affect Iowans.

Our KCCI-TV coverage partner reports that companies requesting continued sizes are part of the so-called “Southwest Power Pool,” made up of a utility group from 14 states, including Iowa. Much of western Iowa is served by the Southwest Power Pool.

The Humboldt-based Corn Belt Power Cooperative informs customers that there may be intermittent power outages that last 45 minutes.

MidAmerican Energy asks its customers to conserve natural gas consumption during extreme cold. The company said its systems work as expected, but the flow of natural gas to Iowa has been affected by frozen wells in the southern U.S.

Alliant Energy said it plans to have sufficient supplies to provide natural gas and electricity to its customers.
