Vaccine effectiveness provokes controversy

Infectologist Jesús Feris Iglesias said yesterday that any vaccine against COVID that is more than 70% effective is excellent for immunizing and ensuring the protection of the population.

He warns that in the current emergency situation in the Dominican Republic, the country must access any of those available for application regardless of name and country of origin, as long as they exceed this level of effectiveness.

The researcher said that there are currently different vaccines that are being applied and all have an effectiveness of over 70%, among which he cited the CoronaVac produced by the Chinese industry Sinovac, the Russian, Modern, the AstraZeneca and Pfizer, among others, approved for emergency placement.

He said the country is in a national emergency with an epidemic that has claimed many lives and left many sequelae, hospitals and clinics are crowded with patients and there is no effective treatment, so the only solution it has is to mass vaccination of the entire population over 18 years of age.

“At this time of national alarm what we need to do is push for vaccination with all available vaccines,” said Feris Iglesias, noting that what needs to be done is to advocate for all those that have adequate effectiveness to to human protection.

Consulted by telephone, the infectologist responded to statements by the president of the Dominican Medical College (CMD), Waldo Ariel Suero, who warned that the guild “is not convinced” by the AstraZeneca vaccine for being one of the most questioned as to its effectiveness and side effects.

Serum indicated that CMD prioritizes Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to have higher levels of coverage and effectiveness.

The unionist described as “hasty” the hiring of AstraZeneca vaccine by the Dominican government, the first payment was made through a donation from the private sector in the amount of US $ 8 million.

In this regard, Feris Iglesias said that the president of the CMD must speak on a technical issue in health after consulting expert medical companies, which could determine that he has not done before issuing their opinions.
