On Wednesday, March 24, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced an extension of eligibility for coronavirus vaccination to more residents.
Edwards says Louisiana will see vaccine dose allocations increase starting next week.
Louisiana is now expected to get more than 148,000 first doses directly next week, in addition to the vaccine doses provided to partner pharmacies in a federal pharmacy program, as well as the federally qualified Health Care Center program. More than one million Louisians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
With these new allocations, the governor says that as of Monday, March 29, eligibility for the vaccine will be open to anyone 16 years of age or older in the state, regardless of health conditions.
“Based on the doses we’ll have available next week, now is absolutely the time to expand vaccine eligibility as widely as we can, which is for all 16-year-olds or more in Louisiana. It’s about ‘an exciting development, but the hard work to make sure our family, friends, co-workers and neighbors have access to the vaccine will continue for months,’ Governor Edwards said. “Our goal has been to get the dose of vaccine we receive in the arms of some within seven days of the arrival of the doses, because a shot sitting on a shelf does not help us end this pandemic. The three vaccines available they are safe and effective for all communities and represent our best hope of being able to reclaim Louisiana. “
Starting Monday, March 29, ALL Louisians 16 years of age or older will be eligible for the COVID vaccine. Visit https://t.co/nPaxdKaOXy for more information.

Appointments will still be required and providers may need time to update their scheduling systems, which means people may have to wait a few days to schedule their appointments for next week.
There are three authorized COVID-19 vaccines used in the United States: Pfizer and Modern two-dose vaccines and one Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine. People aged 16 and 17 are only eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine and should consult their primary care physician or vaccine provider to ensure that the appropriate vaccine is being given.
“I am deeply grateful to the health workers and vaccine providers in Louisiana who have worked tirelessly not only to treat sick patients, but now to vaccinate our people. This has been an absolutely unprecedented effort and nurses, doctors and other Louisiana health workers have been up to par every time they have been called. I hope people have patience over the next few days when providers start accepting appointments. Keep in mind that there will be enough doses for everyone who wants to make one to get one, ”Governor Edwards said.
Edwards spoke about his concerns about Region 5 in Louisiana. In this region, the percentage of positivity has continued to rise over the past 5 weeks, said Dr. Kanter with LDH. This area includes Lake Charles
Kanter asked these residents to be vigilant, to hide, and to stay away socially. He also urged residents of this area to get the vaccine.
“Variants continue to grow in Louisiana,”
164 confirmed variants from the UK to the state. 96 of these cases are in Region 5.
No variants of the African or Brazilian coronavirus have been reported in Louisiana. With variant B.1.1.7. Or from the UK, which continues to grow in Louisiana and neighboring states, Edwards and Kanter say it is crucial to get vaccinated as quickly and equitably as possible.
The first nine pilot sites of the state’s Bring Back Louisiana campaign will begin next week. The effort will cover urban and agricultural areas of the state. Interventions and phone calls will be made to connect people with vaccines that need it most.
Last week, the Louisiana Department of Health launched the campaign. To sign up to volunteer for this effort, click here.
The Postal Code 70582 of the parish of St. Martin was advertised as a target location.
Dr. Kanter made an update on what fully vaccinated people can expect. He says those who are fully vaccinated can visit them with other vaccinated people very close by, without masks or distances.
Those fully vaccinated may also refrain from quarantining if exposed to COVID-19.
In public spaces, masking and social distancing are still necessary, as virus transmission continues to occur.
On Monday, Kanter says he is going to get vaccinated. If you have already done so, your work is not finished. “Be an ambassador for friends and family, so we’ll get the herd’s immunity.”
Edwards said Louisians have a role to play
“I imagine there will be a lot of steps to get back to normal,” Edwards said.
