Valentine, the priest who was executed on February 14th

Every February 14 the world, or most countries celebrate the day of “Valentine’s Day” or “Love and friendship”, without knowing the true meaning of this day and in homage to those who are remembered. We leave you with a little of the story:

On February 14, 278, in Rome, he was executed on priest Valentine, Sentenced to death for disobeying a marriage ban imposed by the Emperor Claudius II.

In these times of bloody battles, Claudius wanted to form a great military force for his empire. However, difficulties in getting soldiers led him to assume that the Romans were unwilling to join the army due to the strong inclination towards their wives and families.

The emperor’s solution was drastic: he forbade marriages and engagements in Rome. The priest Valentine, in disagreement with the unjust measures of the emperor, continued secretly celebrating marriages.

Upon being discovered, he was arrested and sentenced to death. the sentence was held on 14 February: The priest was beaten to death and beheaded. After his death, Valentine was named saint.

Legend has it that Valentine left a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter, with whom he had established a friendship, and signed it “Of Your Valentine.”
