A strange disruption affects Internet users in the northeastern US It’s not entirely clear what’s going on, but it’s certainly annoying.

On Tuesday around 12 noon, they reportedly began pouring out the stop reports DownDetector, which tracks online service outages. But it is not limited to a single company; users reported issues with Comcast, Google, Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Amazon Web Services and many more. (Own AWS status page indicates that their services are working normally, so it’s worth it.)

While the cause (or causes) remains unconfirmed, a Verizon fiber-optic cable cut in Brooklyn, New York, may be the culprit. Verizon Customer Support confirmed on Twitter that one of his wires had been cut and customers dit they received a notification of the interruption by email.

Not all services or users seem to be affected equally. Even among New York-based Gizmodo staff, the problem seems … weird. An editor could access Slack well, but Google services did not work. Others experienced slower response times while being able to access all the services they tried to use.

At the time of writing, several services, including Google and Zoom, appear to be back online. Other users remain inaccessible.

A Verizon spokesman said in an email that he was studying the issue.

An AWS spokesman said the problem was related to an internet service provider and not AWS. In an email, a Google spokesperson echoed AWS and said in a statement: “We are aware of reports of issues affecting access to some Google products, but we have not found any issues with our services. We continue to investigate. “

We’ve also contacted Comcast for more information about the service outage and will update when we receive news. If the interruption affects you, please let us know what you see in the comments.

Updated 1:25 PM ET, January 26: AWS confirmed that problems experienced by customers were related to an Internet service provider, not AWS. Google said ‘s is investigating the issue, but has not found any issues with its services.
