Local authorities reported one injured as a result of the earthquake

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of the Japanese city of Miyagi today.

The quake occurred at 18:09 local time (09:09 GMT), its epicenter was about 20 kilometers off the Ojika Peninsula in Miyagi, and a depth of 60 kilometers, the Meteorological Agency has detailed of Japan (JMA, acronym in English).

Images of the time when the earthquake occurred showed staff at a local hospital struggling to stand up, as well as how the ceiling-hanging lights and other equipment were moving.

A tsunami alert was initially issued by the Government which has warned that a tsunami of up to one meter could hit some parts of the coastal areas of Miyagi prefecture. However, the JMA raised the alert around 7:30 p.m. local time.

The warning was issued in the face of the possibility of some changes in the level of the tides, but there is no concern about tsunami damage.
