Viking survival, Valheim, announced early access

A Viking character with his back turned is in front of a partially built wooden pavilion. Outside there are piles of logs and a workbench.

Oh yeah, there’s another early access crafting survival game on the horizon, but hey, this one has Vikings. In this Rust ’em up called Valheim, you’ll cut yourself a house in a “procedurally generated purgatory” full of supernatural evil inspired by Norse legend. The Iron Gate multiplayer Viking puzzle enters early access early next month on February 2nd.

“Harassed by creatures of chaos and ancient enemies of the gods, you are the newest guardian of primordial purgatory, tasked with killing Odin’s ancient rivals and bringing order to Valheim,” the creators say. Before you attack and dethrone gods, however, I suspect, as evidenced by the top, that you will begin your adventure by chopping down trees. Sure enough, watch some wood cutting in the new Valheim trailer below. Be careful, though, it looks like falling trees can kill you.

Once you’ve created some equipment and maybe a long boat or two, Valheim will send you to fight beasts like hordes of skeletons, tree monsters, and huge evil deer. You don’t have to go there alone either. With friends by your side, you can work on building a settlement of pavilions, farms, and boats. Valheim will allow you to organize a multiplayer session or, if you have the knowledge, spin your own server for persistent Viking purgatory.

Iron Gate says they expect Valheim to have early access for at least a year. During this time, they will add additional items to ships, new enemies and bosses, new biomes and more.

You can find Valheim on Steam, where it will land in early access on February 2nd.
