Virginia Tech has chosen not to participate in a bowling game, ending the longest bowling streak in the country in 27 consecutive years.
Coach Justin Fuente said Wednesday that he met with the team and the players decided they wanted to avoid any postseason opportunities.
Virginia Tech ends season 5-6 and joins Boston College, Pitt, Virginia and Georgia Tech in the ACC to opt for a bowl during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We had a team meeting and our players have decided not to play, and I will support them 100%,” Fuente said. “He talks about the difficulty of the season they’ve been through. There were players who wanted to play, but we would all do it together or not, and it became clear that it was a very difficult situation.

Virginia Tech was especially affected by coronavirus problems throughout the season. Athletic director Whit Babcock estimated that about three-quarters of the team had contracted the virus since March, along with eight of the ten full-time attendees.
