General Surgeon Vivek Murthy and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona unit Special report with Bret Baier Thursday to talk about Covid-19, especially preventing the spread of the virus in schools.
“What protects you more if you already have Covid or the vaccine?” Baier asked Murthy.
“So what we do know is that there are two ways to protect,” Murthy said. “The vaccine is the most studied and most reliable. We know that when you get infected, you can get some degree of protection. What we have less clear is how long this protection lasts. But this is what the research has told us very clearly: if you get infected and get a dose of vaccine, increase your antibody levels and your protection to incredible levels. And therefore, you are even more protected.
Baier later played a clip of a man who asked him if it was advisable to expose children to Covid-19 properly, in a strategy similar to how some parents treat chickenpox.
“I wanted to know if it made sense or not to allow our children to be exposed to Covid, because the chance of them dying because of it is so minimal that maybe we can expose them to Covid and give them a natural immunity,” he said. the man.
“When someone had chickenpox, we would take the kids home to be exposed to chickenpox, to get it. And I’m just curious to know if that would make sense or not.”
“Well it’s a reasonable question to ask,” Murthy said. He elaborated:
Although children perform better than older adults in terms of Covid-19 results, Covid is not harmless in our children. Over the past year and a half, we have lost hundreds of children against Covid-19. We have had thousands hospitalized.
We currently have one of our highest levels of Covid hospitalizations among children. And we also know the long Covid, which is that syndrome in which children may experience shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms for months after infection, which affects a not very significant number of children.
So the safest thing we do is weigh the risks and benefits here. And when we do that, we see that getting vaccinated is actually a much lower risk and higher benefit proposition than allowing our children to have Covid and be at risk for complications.
