Volunteer cruise guard dies rescuing children from car near Lafayette Middle School, according to family

LAFAYETTE, California (KGO) – The dismissal at Stanley Middle School in Lafayette took a tragic turn on Tuesday, when an SUV hit a volunteer crossing the guard and student in front of the school.

Police said the SUV crashed into the guard and a child around 3 p.m.

The family of the cross guard told ABC7 news reporter Kate Larsen that she was killed while rescuing children from an oncoming car.

“The paramedics took him out and he was given CPR,” said Stella Champion, a 6th grader who was then crowded with School Street. “I think there was a child injured, but the crossing guard saved him.”

Ashley Dias, 45, volunteered at Stanley, the same high school she attended while growing up in Lafayette.

“It’s amazing, just this morning we talked to him, in the afternoon we talked to him before we both got ready for the crossing,” his father, Fabio Dias, explained.

Fabio and Gloria Dias live nearby. They say Ashley lived in San Francisco and worked in computer science, but when she visited them, she often helped out at school because they were little guardians.

“He was a great son,” Fabio said, “he’s devastating.”

An unthinkable task for any father, Fabio and Gloria went to John Muir Hospital to identify their son’s body.

“The father of one of the children came to me, a doctor at John Muir Hospital, and said to me, ‘If it weren’t for your son, my daughter would be dead,'” said Gloria, who continued to cry. . he died like a hero, but he will never return to us, he is gone. “

As for the driver of the SUV, she is the grandmother of a Stanley student who was in the car during the accident. ABC7 News journalist Kate Larsen spoke to her son on the phone, who said both his mother and son are at home and are physically well. He declined an interview but said: “We are very sorry and devastated by this unthinkable horrible accident.”
