Police are investigating an attempted bombing Wednesday afternoon at the Democratic Party office in Spokane County on North Division Street. Nicole Bishop, the leader of the local Democrats, said she was not in office today, but a volunteer said a person came in and handed her a paper. He asked the volunteer if she knew what this meant, and she said no, the bishop said. The person said, “This is a statement and I have a bomb.” The volunteer was able to see the wires coming out of his bag, Bishop said. Bishop said he did not know if there was an explosion, but there is a small fire, which he believes may have been the result of his device. “They are all physically safe, but they are definitely going to be shocked,” Bishop said. Spokane Police Department spokesman Chargett said police detained one person around 1 a.m. Wednesday. John O’Brien. A bomb squad, Swat team members, fire trucks, ambulances and at least one K9 handler arrived at the scene, where police cordoned off several blocks. At 1 p.m., a robot to deactivate the bombs sat outside 1912 North Division Street, the Teamsters Workers ‘Union building where the Democrats’ offices are located. “We urge every elected official and community leader to join us in condemning this politically motivated act of violence,” Bishop wrote in a news release Wednesday. “No one has to fear for their lives because they participate in our political process.”
