“They have no evidence to support the attacks on Smartmatic because there is no evidence. This campaign is designed to defame Smartmatic and undermine legally held elections,” Smartmatic CEO Antonio Mugica said in a statement. “Our efforts are smart or any other organization. This campaign is an attack on electoral systems and election workers, to undermine confidence in future elections and to oppose the will of the electorate, not only here but in democracies around the world.”
The company told three news organizations that it has the right to sue in defamation and defamation cases.
Representatives from Fox News, Newsmax and OAN did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Smartmatic and Dominion voting systems are at the forefront of conspiracy theories about the outcome of the presidential election. Trump and his allies have repeatedly cited votes for both companies, and some have said they are backed by communist money as part of a broader conspiracy to undermine the election.
None of Trump’s lawyers, however, presented such evidence in court. A former top cyber security official of the government has repeatedly said that the 2020 election is very secure and both Smartmatic and Dominion officials have backed down on the claims.
Smartmatic said it had designed and implemented voting technology in 25 to 25 countries without missing a security breach on Monday.
The president refused to agree, repeatedly insisting that he had actually won the election and calling for a large number of votes to be cast to clear the measure in his favor in a few swing states. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a lawsuit from Texas, the latest blow to a long-running campaign.
