Wayne County is issuing the mask warrant for all schools this fall

DETROIT – The Wayne County Department of Public Health issued a new public health order Friday that required local school districts, schools and kindergarten providers to require students, teachers, staff and visitors to bring a face mask at school and during school-sponsored covered events.

The order takes effect immediately.

Wayne County health officials announced the warrant Friday, as the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19 continues to spread rapidly and threaten public health. Officials have issued a county-wide mask requirement for all Wayne County schools for the 2021-2022 school year, replacing the already established mask policies by individual school districts.

This includes students, staff, employees and visitors public, private and parish educational environments, including daycares, throughout Wayne County.

The order directs schools and nursery school providers to:

  • You need to wear masks inside for everyone preschool students through 12th grade, regardless of their immunization status; i,

  • The masks must be worn inside all teachers, administrative staff, other employees, parents / guardians, assistants and volunteers.

Although national health officials and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services have recommended universal masking in schools this academic year as the highly contagious delta variant traverses the region, the state of Michigan has no intention. to issue a sweeping mask warrant for schools. Instead, individual school districts have been left to determine whether masks are mandatory or optional for students and staff.

Prior to the county’s mask mandate, at least 11 Wayne County school districts had so far issued fall mask mandates, including Detroit Public Schools, Plymouth-Canton Public Schools, and Livonia Public Schools. The new county-wide health order will not be imposed on the city of Detroit, which resides in the county but has its own health department. a warrant issued by the district.

Wayne County is now the second County Detroit Metro to issue a county-wide mask requirement for schools for the 2021-2022 school year, after Oakland County. Genesee County, home of Flint, also has a school mask mandate as the academic year begins.
