When the delayed shipments arrive from Michigan, Wayne County will focus on getting them into the arms of those over 65 making them more accessible.
The winter storm slowed things down in Wayne County, but as the doses arrive, they pledge to take them to seniors, targeting eight different communities where they are located.
These communities are: Canton, Plymouth, Highland Park, Hamtramck, Inkster, Melvindale, Romulus and Wayne. * Disclaimer: You must be a resident of the city you are calling to get an appointment *
Starting Monday, Wayne County residents who are 65 or older can call one of eight community or senior centers. The county health department plans to administer another 13,000 doses next week, which will be one of its largest shipments to date, though it’s not yet as large as the shipments Detroit has been getting.
Last week, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced an extension of vaccine eligibility to all Detroit residents over the age of 60 with chronic medical conditions, offering $ 2 trips to the TCF Center for those who they need it.
It’s a terrifying reality: Wayne County hopes to bring peace of mind and easier access to people over the age of 65 who get vaccinated in neighborhoods. There are no appointments on foot and seniors must make an appointment by calling the place number in their communities. .
More vaccination sites for the elderly will be announced as more vaccine becomes available. In all, Wayne County public health and local health systems have provided more than 181,596 doses to Wayne County residents since the vaccine was available in December.
